More About
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an integrative approach to
help patients control symptoms and improve day-to-day
activities through exercise training and behavioral and
educational programs. Patients undergoing rehabilitation
must work closely with their doctors, nurses,
respiratory, physical and occupational therapists,
psychologists, exercise specialists and dietitians. You
can benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation if you have
decreased function despite standard medical treatment.
Other benefits from pulmonary rehabilitation include
maintaining healthy behaviors such as smoking cessation,
good nutrition and exercise.
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the most
common disease involved in referral for rehabilitation
services. Other examples of conditions that would be
candidates for this treatment include asthma, cystic
fibrosis, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease,
lung cancer, some neuromuscular diseases, postpolio
syndrome, and perioperative conditions (thoracic or
abdominal surgery, lung transplants, lung volume
reduction surgery).
Other examples of conditions that would benefit from
Pulmonary Rehabilitation are myocardial infarction,
stable angina, coronary artery bypass graft surgery,
perctuaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, valve
surgery, chronic stable heart failure, ventricular
assist devices, diabetes, cardiac transplantation,
peripheral arterial disease and high risk for coronary
artery disease.
Goals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation are to reduce
symptoms, increase exercise performance, increase
knowledge about pulmonary disease and its management,
reduce physical symptoms, improve health related quality
of life, improve psychosocial symptoms, reduce
hospitalizations and use of medical resources. Most
importantly, Pulmonary Rehabilitation can keep you out
of the hospital and drastically improve your function in
daily living.
