PHYSICAL
MEDICINE
Physiatrists are physicians who
specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This
is a medical specialty that deals with the evaluation
and treatment of patients whose functional abilities
have been impaired. The disabilities and impairments may
result from injuries or diseases such as stroke,
neuromuscular disorders, cardiopulmonary diseases,
arthritis, peripheral vascular disease, cerebral palsy
and others.
The physiatrist can help to improve a
person's functional capabilities by medical treatment
and organizing and integrating a program of
rehabilitation therapy such as physical, occupational,
speech therapies, psychological, social, nursing
prosthetic, orthotic, engineering and vocational
services.

More About
Physical Medicine
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a health care
specialty that focuses on restoring the health and
functional abilities of people after an acute illness or
injury. This health service focuses on treating the
whole patient, not just one part of the body. The goal
of physical medicine and rehab is to restore patients to
their normal daily living activities or to the highest
level they are capable of. This branch of medicine is
non-surgical management and treatment of injuries and
diseases. It is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment
of physical disability. Acute and chronic pain and
musculoskeletal disorders are treated in physical
medicine and rehabilitation.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is an
interdisciplinary service. Other specialists that a
physiatrist may consult include physical therapists,
occupational therapists, nurses, speech and language
pathologists, prosthesis, social workers, psychologists
and psychiatrists. The patients’ family, community,
occupation, friends and lifestyle are also taken into
account when a treatment plan is formed.
A physiatrist is a physician specializing in physical
medicine and rehabilitation. They offer an aggressive,
non-surgical approach to pain and injury. Physiatrists
do not perform surgery. Treatments include pain
medications, injections, braces, artificial limbs,
therapies (such as hot/cold therapy), electrotherapies,
massage, biofeedback, traction and therapeutic exercise.
During treatment, an emphasis is placed on the restoring
maximum function through combined use of medications,
physical modalities and experimental training
approaches.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is aimed at
reducing or relieving pain. Long-term rehabilitation may
be suitable for those with musculoskeletal disorders,
back and neck pain, joint replacement, fibromyalgia and
other chronic pain conditions, birth defects such as
cerebral palsy, burns and pain problems following trauma
and surgeries.
Examples of people who are treated by physiatrists are
victims of stroke, spinal cord injuries, heart surgery,
amputation, joint replacement, sports injuries or spinal
disorders.
The focus of physical medicine and rehabilitation is to
enhance the patients’ quality of life. This can be
obtained by a physiatrist using combined methods of
treatment in an integrative setting. |
